Visionary. Philanthropist. Builder.
There’s only one title left to bestow on former Baltimore Ravens owner Art Modell, who died last week at the age of 87. It’s a title that should have been bestowed on him a long time ago: Hall of Famer.
Mr. Modell’s contributions to the growth of the NFL are so substantial that his absence from pro football’s shrine in Canton, Ohio, should be embarrassing to every Hall of Fame voter who has had a chance to cast a ballot for him. That Mr. Modell moved the Browns out of Cleveland is simply no justification for his exclusion.
The hall’s voters have a chance to right the wrong — again — this year, and we urge them to take that action. Even if they do, the shame will be that Mr. Modell didn’t live to receive the honor he so richly deserved.
