Expansion of U-Md. in Hagerstown nearly complete

HAGERSTOWN — The University System of Maryland says an expansion of its downtown Hagerstown campus is nearly complete.

The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown reports that new classrooms are being built in a former CVS pharmacy near an existing classroom and administration building.

Executive Director Mark Halsey says he hopes for occupancy by mid-October.

Halsey says the building will provide three classrooms for six new faculty members and an additional 90 students.

He says the university system is also considering opening a coffee shop in the complex.

The campus opened in 2005 in a complex of vacant buildings. State officials hailed it as a model of smart growth and an anchor for downtown redevelopment.
