Maryland ranks dead last among the 50 states and Washington, D.C., in the amount of funding that it dedicates, per capita, for bicycle commuter projects, according to BikeGuard, a free online bike registry.
Based on recently released census data, Maryland spends 45 cents per person annually for bike projects. Alaska spends the most per capita for bike commuter projects, at $18.79 per person.
Other findings: Maryland has 5,674 bicycle commuters (85 percent male), and ranks 41st among states in the percentage of commuters relying on bicycles to travel to and from work (0.20 percent). Washington, D.C., has the highest percentage nationwide of bicycle commuters, at 3.13 percent.
