Md. settles with hand sanitizer company

Maryland Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler said the Consumer Protection Division reached a settlement with San Francisco-based CleanWell Co., also called OhSoClean Inc., a manufacturer of hand sanitizer products, over allegedly deceptive marketing practices.

The state alleged CleanWell made unsubstantiated claims that its hand sanitizer is “proven to kill 99.99 percent of germs that can make you sick … including MRSA, Salmonella, Staph, and E. coli.”

CleanWell agreed to pay $100,000 in penalties and costs, to change how it markets its hand sanitizer products, and to refrain from any false, misleading or deceptive promotion of those products, including specific percentages of germs killed, without scientific proof to support its claims.
