Testimony expected to wrap up in Perdue pollution suit

Testimony is expected to wrap up in an environmental lawsuit against an Eastern Shore chicken grower and poultry giant Perdue Farms Inc.

Testimony is expected to conclude Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Baltimore, although closing arguments are not expected for several weeks. The non-jury trial will be decided by the judge.

The Waterkeeper Alliance says the Berlin-based Hudson Farm is polluting a nearby river and Perdue should also be held responsible. Lawyers for Hudson and Salisbury-based Perdue say there’s no evidence of pollution.

The case against Berlin-based Hudson Farm and Perdue is being watched by environmentalists and the poultry industry. Farm groups say the suit could bankrupt the Hudson Farm and set a harmful precedent for others. Environmentalist say poultry companies should be responsible for pollution by their growers.
