SPRINGFIELD, Va. — Virginia State Police are urging caution for drivers as several accidents have already been reported since the opening of new express lanes on the Capital Beltway.
Monday morning was the first rush hour commute for the new 495 Express Lanes. The 14-mile section runs from the Springfield Interchange to just north of the Dulles Toll Road.
State Police said that as of Monday afternoon, there have already been six crashes since the lanes debuted Saturday. All occurred at the same northbound entrance near Braddock Road.
Tolls on the express lanes will vary based on the amount of traffic. The average toll is expected to be between $3 and $6. Drivers must use an E-Z Pass to use the lanes. Carpools of three or more are exempt from the tolls.
