O’Malley postpones trade mission to Israel

Gov. Martin O’Malley has canceled Maryland’s trade mission to the Middle East in the wake of continued fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip.

In a statement released by the governor’s office Tuesday, O’Malley said the economic development trip that also included stops in Jordan and Ramallah would be rescheduled.

“Not wanting to be a distraction from the urgent cause of peace, I look forward to visiting Israel in the months ahead with Maryland business, research and academic leaders,” O’Malley said in a statement. “For now, we join with our Israeli and Palestinian neighbors in praying for a cease-fire and peaceful resolution to the conflict.”

The trip would have been O’Malley’s second to Israel. He first visited in 2008.
