Area Habitat group gets $1M Weinberg grant

Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake on Tuesday said it will receive a capital grant of $1 million from the Owings Mills-based Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, one of the nation’s largest private foundations.

The two-year “basic needs” grant — $500,000 per year — will support the construction and rehabilitation of 56 properties in three Baltimore neighborhoods: Woodbourne-McCabe, Mount Winans and Washington Village/Pigtown. Specifically, the funding will be used to renovate 53 vacant homes and build three community parks for low-income Habitat partner families.

HHC, a nonprofit, Christian-oriented housing organization, builds affordable homes for low-income residents, aided by volunteers.
