ANNAPOLIS — President Barack Obama is scheduled to speak at the U.S. Naval Academy’s graduation in May.

Vice Adm. Michael Miller, the superintendent, told the academy’s Board of Visitors on Monday the president had committed to speak at the May 24 commissioning ceremony.

Judy Campbell, an academy spokeswoman, says 16 U.S. presidents have addressed graduating classes at the academy in Annapolis, which is about 30 miles from Washington.

Miller told board members more presidents have spoken at Naval Academy graduations than any other service academy.

Campbell says Obama will be the sixth president to have spoken twice to a graduating class in Annapolis. The first time was in 2009. That was months after Obama defeated Sen. John McCain, a Naval Academy alumnus, for his first term in the White House.
