Program cuts eyed at Antietam National Battlefield
Listen to this articleHAGERSTOWN — The National Park Service says federal budget cuts will likely cause reductions in ranger-led tours and monument maintenance at the Antietam National Battlefield near Sharpsburg.
Park Superintendent Susan Trail told The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown Monday that programs for schoolchildren may also be reduced.
She says the park’s visitor center probably won’t extend its hours of operation this summer. The closing time is usually extended from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. during the summer months.
Trail says the park’s plan for dealing with the budget cuts should be finished in a couple of weeks.
Antietam was the site of the bloodiest day of combat on U.S. soil. More than 23,000 men were reported killed, wounded or missing there on Sept. 17, 1862.
