Free books for locales hit by Sandy

FirstBook, a Washington-based nonprofit social organization that provides new books to children in need, said it has over 1.1 million new books reserved for Title I schools and other programs in 13 states, including Maryland, designated by the federal government as affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Random House contributed over 1 million books, with support from Houghton Miffllin Harcourt, the American Federation of Teachers and the United Federation of Teachers, among others.

Teachers, librarians or program leaders can sign up online to apply for the books (http://www.firstbook.org/receive-books).

All books are free, schools and programs need only pay the associated shipping and handling charges.
