Ocean City finishes $6M boardwalk rebuild
Listen to this articleOCEAN CITY — Ocean City officials say the last nail has been hammered in their three-year, $6 million boardwalk rebuilding project.
Resort officials say the last planks were nailed in place on Friday, although a few finishing touches remain.
City Engineer Terry McGean told The Daily Times of Salisbury that the beach resort was able to save about $1 million by having contractors find new uses for the old boards. Those uses included selling the boards to a Florida company for use as distressed siding and as fence rails.
The new boards are strong enough to support the weight of fire trucks and other heavy vehicles, which the old boardwalk couldn’t.
The last major boardwalk rebuild was in 1986 after Hurricane Gloria.
