Discovery’s 1Q revenue tops forecasts

Buoyed by strong growth at its international networks, Silver Spring-based Discovery Communications Inc. reported first-quarter financial results that outpaced Wall Street’s forecast for revenue, but fell short on net earnings.

The worldwide non-fiction media company reported first-quarter net income of $231 million, or 63 cents per diluted share, up from $221 million, or 57 cents per diluted share, in the prior-year period.

The average estimate of 25 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters was for earnings of 65 cents per share. Revenue totaled $1.16 billion, compared to $1.085 billion in the 2012 quarter.

Analysts had forecast, on average, revenue of $1.15 billion.
