FREDERICK — Maryland State Police are asking Frederick County deputies to patrol parts of state routes 85 and 355 due to a trooper shortage there and a reorganization of the state agency.
Spokesman Greg Shipley said Wednesday the changes don’t reflect a statewide trend. He says Baltimore County police already patrol some state highways.
Shipley says road patrol responsibilities differ from county to county under agreements that are routinely reviewed. He says Carroll County’s agreement is also being revised because the county has chosen to stop subsidizing additional troopers there.
Shipley says the trooper force is at about 90 percent of full strength but more will be hired in the fiscal year starting July 1.
He says some troopers have been reassigned to other duties such as aviation and commercial vehicle enforcement.
