DOVER, Del. — A Rehoboth Beach resident has filed a federal lawsuit challenging the town’s new $40 parking permit fee for motorized scooters.
In a complaint filed Monday, Lawrence Myslewski says the new fee is unconstitutional because residents do not have to pay to get parking permits for their cars or other motorized vehicles.
The new scooter permit was imposed amid complaints that scooter owners were driving and parking on sidewalks, which officials said created safety concerns.
The new permit allows scooters to park on city streets in non-metered areas, in permit parking areas on residential streets, and in some 200 newly designated “scooter-only” locations.
The city manager says more than 120 scooter parking permits have been sold so far in advance of this year’s summer season.
