Audit cites Md. schools spending of stimulus money

A federal audit is focusing on how public schools in Maryland spent federal stimulus money.

The U.S. Department of Education audited the way the state spent stimulus money. It found Baltimore City Schools spent $4,352 on a pair of dinner cruises. It also found $1,575 was spent for catering at school events and $1,336 for theater tickets.

Prince George’s County Schools also were criticized for similar spending.

The audit was released in January. Maryland Republicans called for an investigation on Wednesday.

The Maryland State Department of Education, which administered the money, says it partially agreed with the finding. A spokesman says the department is working to resolve the issues raised by the audit.
