Mikulski pledges weather modeling funds

U.S. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, D-Md., who chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee, said that she intends to use that power to improve U.S. weather forecasting.

Visiting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Center for Weather and Climate Prediction in College Park on Tuesday, Mikulski announced a $50 million investment in a new supercomputer to improve weather modeling, the Maryland News Connection reported.

She said the need became apparent after European models proved to be more accurate in forecasting Hurricane Sandy than did U.S. computers.

“We love the Europeans … but I’ll be darned if they’re going to have a better weather model than the United States of America,” Mikulski said.
