Baltimore-area exports set new record

Merchandise exports from the Baltimore-Towson metropolitan area totaled a record $5.8 billion, an increase of 6 percent or $321 million from 2011 to 2012, according to export data from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration.

“This growth helped Baltimore to remain a top metropolitan area for exports in 2012,” the ITA said in announcing the new figures.

Key merchandise export categories for the Baltimore-Towson metropolitan area in 2012 included computer and electronic products, chemicals, transportation equipment, machinery, and mining and quarrying.

Canada, the United Kingdom, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Egypt were the leading destinations for Baltimore exports.
