PSC grants less than half of Pepco rate hike request

The Maryland Public Service Commission on Friday approved an increase in electricity rates by Pepco, but allowed the D.C.-area utility less than half of what it requested.

The PSC approved about $28 million in additional distribution rates, but rejected Pepco’s request for a revenue increase totaling $60 million. The approved rate increase will raise the average residential customer’s bill by about $2.41 per month.

Paula M. Carmody, head of the Office of People’s Counsel, which represents consumers before the PSC, said she is “disappointed” the commission granted the utility’s request for an infrastructure surcharge, which OPC had challenged and successfully opposed in the past.
