Reisner to head stem cell grants panel

Avram Israel Reisner, a bioethicist and rabbi who leads a Conservative Jewish congregation in Baltimore, has been elected chairman of the Maryland Stem Cell Research Commission.

Reisner was appointed to the commission by Gov. Martin O’Malley in 2010.

He succeeds Margaret Conn Himelfarb, who has chaired the commission for three years.

The commission is responsible for selecting recipients of grants from the Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund.

Reisner is the rabbi of Congregatioin Chevrei Tzedek in Baltimore.

Also, David Mosser, a professor of cell biology and molecular genetics at the University of Maryland, College Park, was elected as the commission’s vice chair.
