The National Transportation Safety Board says it will investigate last week’s accident on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in which a car that collided with a tractor-trailer went over the railing and into the water.

The NTSB said Wednesday it will send two investigators from the Office of Highway Safety to Maryland to meet with local authorities about the July 19 crash. Officials say the agency will determine if there are any nationwide safety issues involved in the crash.

Twenty-two-year-old Morgan Lake of Sunderland survived a 40-foot plunge off the bridge and swam to some rocks until she was rescued.

AAA Mid-Atlantic and Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski had called for a federal investigation into the bridge’s safety.
