Howard Co., APL to unveil tech transfer pact

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman has scheduled an announcement Thursday of a new commercial partnership between the Howard County Economic Development Authority and the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, aimed at bringing technologies developed at the APL to market.

Several technologies identified for possible commercialization will be displayed at the news conference, including a backpack-sized package for mapping in GPS-deprived areas; a device that turns off-the-shelf, remote-controlled vehicles into autonomous, controlled vehicles; and materials to help repair eye injuries.

APL has approximately 5,000 staff members who occupy 32 buildings on a 399-acre main campus in Laurel, and six leased buildings in the adjoining Montpelier Research Park.
