Frederick voters to cast ballots in city primary

FREDERICK — Democrats and Republicans are heading to the polls in Frederick to select candidates for mayor and the Board of Aldermen in the city’s primary election.

The city’s six polling places are open Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Unaffiliated voters and voters with other parties will have to wait until the Nov. 5 general election to cast their ballots.

Incumbent Republican Mayor Randy McClement faces former mayor William “Jeff” Holtzinger and Alderwoman Shelley Aloi. Holtzinger served one term, but he chose not to seek re-election and supported McClement in 2009.

In the Democratic mayoral race, Alderwoman Karen Young faces Delegate Galen Clagett and newcomer Carol Hirsch.

The winning Republican and Democrat will join former Mayor Jennifer Dougherty, who is running as an unaffiliated candidate, in the general election.
