For most people, the only good thing that comes to mind about jury duty is Pauly Shore. Just my mentioning “jury duty” probably means you’re already thinking about how you are going to get out of it the next time you are summoned.
Which brings us to New Castle County, Delaware, where 1,800 residents recently received an urgent summons to report in two weeks’ time, rather than the usual one month. The jury manager, in a letter accompanying the summons, said the short notice was “due to unusual circumstances.”
Court officials blamed a system error that halted the mailing of juror summonses for a week. The urgent notices were then sent out to ensure there would be enough prospective jurors for potential trials.
Still, those that could not make it to court on the short notice were given postponements.
