A macabre comparison

Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke has a way with words.

But Clarke, who was Baltimore’s first female city council president and is the wife of developer J. Joseph Clarke, may have had one of her darker moments when lobbying against an appeals board granting a zoning variance for Crittenton Place in Hampden.

The developer was arguing it needed a variance to build 19 proposed townhouses closer to the curb because the Maryland Historical Trust requires new construction not be built too close to the historic Crittenton Manison.

“That’s like murdering your parents and going before the judge and asking for leniency because you’re an orphan,” Clarke quipped.
