Former owner of St. Joseph has agreed to pay as much as $37M in stent cases

The former owner of St. Joseph Medical Center has agreed to pay as much as $37 million to resolve two class-action lawsuits filed by patients who alleged they received unnecessary stents.

The settlements will resolve claims against in Baltimore City Circuit Court and U.S. District Court in Baltimore against Catholic Health Initiatives Inc., St. Joseph and Mark Midei, a former doctor who performed many of the stent operations.

The settlements still require formal approval in both courts.

Both lawsuits accuse Catholic Health and St. Joseph of collecting hundreds of millions of dollars from the stent procedures.

The Daily Record first reported the settlements last week; The Baltimore Sun reported the settlement amount Monday night.
