First Transit Inc., a nationwide bus operator, clarified Friday afternoon that although the company is restructuring a contract it has with Howard County government, no local employees will lose their jobs and there will be no transit service disruptions.
Maryland state officials sent out a notice earlier on Friday saying that Cincinnati-based First Transit would be closing a facility on Macaw Court in Elkridge and terminating 150 people effective July 1.
But a spokeswoman for First Transit said in a statement that all 150 people will be immediately rehired. She said First Transit is transferring its busing contract with Howard County to the firm’s Transit Management group and will “establish a local sub-corporation.”
The employees will be rehired by that new sub-corporation, she said.
The spokeswoman was not available to address whether employees will be offered the same wages and benefits.
First Transit operates and manages the buses for Howard County’s regular fixed-route service and its para-transit service.
