As Baltimore gears up for Preakness, historians and horsemen gathered at the Maryland Historical Society this week to celebrate Maryland’s greater equestrian legacy.
The historical society hosted a reception Tuesday for “Racing the Times,” a documentary in production about Maryland’s long and storied horse industry over the years.
The event showed off not only the documentary, but the wide-ranging support it has garnered. Representatives from the Maryland Horse Breeders Association, the Maryland Jockey Club and the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association all appeared at the event.
“Those three groups are not always in agreement,” said W. Drew Perkins, who is producing the film. “In fact, representatives from each of the groups … said something about that.”
Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller was also in attendance Tuesday.
Perkins said the preview was well-received. The documentary is planned to be finished by this time next year, right around the next Preakness stakes.
