Frederick County sheriff joins border tour

FREDERICK — A Maryland sheriff known for his tough stance on illegal immigration says he’s visiting the U.S-Mexico border to get a firsthand look at the influx of unaccompanied children entering the United States.

Frederick County Sheriff Chuck Jenkins said Monday he’s joining sheriffs from six other counties across the nation this week on a “fact-finding mission” sponsored by the Federation for American Immigration Reform. The Washington-based group advocates a temporary moratorium on almost all immigration until America develops a comprehensive immigration reform strategy.

Under Jenkins’ management, Frederick County deputies have been trained to check the immigration status of people they arrest.

The Republican sheriff has pushed for a state law that would require local police to question the immigration status of people they suspect may be here illegally.

The group sponsoring this junket is the Federation for American Immigration Reform. FAIR, with ties to white supremacists, has been labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. This is at least the second time it has organized a “National Sheriffs’ Border School.”
