O’Malley: Ferguson exposes nation’s divisions

ANNAPOLIS — Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley says the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, shows divisions in the country that will require more than just government policies to repair.

The Washington Post reports that O’Malley commented on Ferguson during an appearance Sunday at a Democratic picnic in New Hampshire. O’Malley, a Democrat, is considering a presidential run. His visit to New Hampshire was his third to the state that holds the nation’s first presidential primary.

The clashes between police and protesters in Ferguson began after an unarmed black teenager was fatally shot by a white police officer. O’Malley says the situation there shows “there are gulfs and gaps and divisions and fears that separate us from one another.” He says bridging those gaps is “not work that we can delegate to government.”
