Maryland Transportation Secretary James T. Smith Jr. said the Red Line is as close to becoming reality as any project waiting on Congress to approve funds.
President Barack Obama has included $100 million in his proposed budget and a recommendation for a full funding grant agreement for the planned light rail line to help pay for the $2.9 billion project. The project would still require appropriations from Congress.
“The Congress hasn’t turned us down. The Congress just hasn’t acted. Which is — they haven’t acted on anything,” Smith said.
Smith made his comments during a press conference touting Baltimore’s commitment to provide $230 million in cash and in-kind contributions to the project.
