Maryland Legal Aid is receiving a $64,000 gift via a cy pres award. The funds were directed to Maryland Legal Aid at the request of Cory L. Zajdel, of Z Law LLC in Reisterstown. The money came from a $3 million settlement in a class action by Maryland consumers brought by Zajdel against a national car finance company that allegedly charged usurious interest and repossessed vehicles without providing adequate notices. As is typical in many class actions, refunds that could not be distributed because class members could not be located or who did not cash settlement checks are returned to a class administrator, who distributes those funds to an entity identified by the court. U.S. District Judge Ellen L. Hollander approved the settlement in February.
