McDaniel to sign Real Food Challenge

On Wednesday, McDaniel College will become the second Maryland college — after Johns Hopkins University — to sign the Real Food Challenge, a pledge to purchase 20 percent of food from local, sustainable, humane and fair-trade sources by 2020. McDaniel, working with food service provider Sodexo, says it is committed to providing food from suppliers within a 250-mile radius who provide certified organic and ecologically sound products. Among the suppliers are: Arnold Farms (Chestertown), Bear Mountain Orchards (Aspers, Pennsylvania); Bakery de France (Rockville), Colora Orchards (Colora), H&S Bakery (Baltimore), Roma Sausage (Baltimore), Shlagel Farms (Waldorf) and Spring Valley Farm and Orchard (Augusta, West Virginia). McDaniel students are offered food options that include vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free menus.
