DNR opens hunting at St. Mary’s park

After requests from the hunting community, Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources decided to permit limited hunting at Newtowne Neck State Park in St. Mary’s County during the 2014-2015 season. Hunting had been suspended when the park temporarily was closed in 2012, and the ban held when the park reopened in April. The Maryland Waterfowler’s Association launched a petition drive to reinstate hunting, and the Maryland Hunting Coalition also made a case with the DNR, including citing the Maryland Hunting Heritage Protection Act of 2005, the coalition said. Coalition lobbyist Bill Miles said in a statement: “Maryland’s hunting community commends … DNR for having been attentive to its concerns. … We can all be grateful that state lawmakers enacted the Maryland Hunting Heritage Protection Act of 2005, which promotes the importance of hunting in the state of Maryland, an act that played a pivotal role in the state’s final decision.”
