The next step for UMCP’s new general counsel

My story this week about the University of Maryland, College Park’s new general counsel focused on the goals he has for the school — but when he joins the school’s legal affairs office next month, there will be one more personal item on the top of his to-do list: become a member of the Maryland Bar.

Michael Poterala, now the deputy general counsel at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, plans to settle into his office at UMCP in mid-January. He said he’s started “pulling the materials together” to apply to take the out-of-state attorney’s exam, next held in February.

A graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, Poterala said he’s looking forward to living in the area again for the first time since law school, after several decades spent working in Michigan and North Carolina.
