City offers pay-by-smartphone

Baltimore has partnered with Global Express, a subsidiary of TIO Networks Corp., to enable city residents to pay water bills and vehicle citations via smartphone. Users can scan a QR code that brings up the payment option page. Payments may be made from a checking account or via debit or credit card. “This new mobile payment option will be particularly appealing for our millennial customers who prefer to do everything with their smartphones,” Janice Simmons, chief of the Bureau of Revenue Collections for the Department of Finance, said in a statement. “This new system will allow the city to meet our customers where they are now and wherever they are going next.”
