ANNAPOLIS — Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley says a plan allowing offshore drilling along a wide area of the Atlantic Coast is “a big mistake” by President Barack Obama’s administration.
O’Malley, a Democrat considering a presidential run in 2016, wrote about his opposition to last week’s decision in an op-ed published in The New York Times on Monday.
O’Malley says the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster is a reminder that the benefits of drilling don’t outweigh threats to local economies, public health and the environment when inevitable spills happen. The 2010 explosion killed 11 workers and resulted in millions of gallons of oil being spewed into the Gulf of Mexico.
O’Malley says there’s no compelling economic or security reason to expose communities of the Atlantic Coast to threats presented by offshore drilling.
