Nick Carraway had the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg watching over him in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby and for some senators who attended the University of Maryland men’s basketball game Tuesday, there’s the Senate president.
Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr., an alum of the university, attended the game accompanied by Gov. Larry Hogan but it was not the Senate President’s physical presence that caught Sen. Brian J. Feldman’s attention.
“You think you’re going to get away from the big footprint of the Senate president and in the student section they have these big headshots of not only the governor but the Senate president,” Feldman said. “I had to sit through the entire game, Mr. President, thinking I was in the Senate chamber with the students waving those big headshots of you looking at me.”
Miller, a vocal advocate of the university, graduated from the institution in 1964 and received his law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law three years later.
“There’s nothing these colleges won’t do for a little extra funding, I can tell you that right now,” Miller said.
