State Sen. Jamin B. “Jamie” Raskin could announce as early as next week that he will seek the House of Representatives seat now held by Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., a person close to the senator said Thursday.
“I am very close to announcing,” said Raskin, D-Montgomery. “I am very psyched to serve the people of this extraordinary community.”
Raskin, a Silver Spring-Takoma Park resident, has served in the Maryland Senate since January 2007, where he was chief sponsor of legislation legalizing same-sex marriage and abolishing the death penalty in the state. The 52-year-old colon-cancer survivor also sponsored legislation permitting the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes.
Raskin is a constitutional-law professor at American University’s Washington College of Law. Van Hollen has announced he will leave the House to run next year for the U.S. Senate seat held by retiring Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Maryland.
