HAGERSTOWN — Rep. John Delaney says widening Interstate 81 would help bring more jobs and prosperity to western Maryland.
The 6th District Democrat discussed his ideas for economic development in the region during a visit Friday to a Volvo truck manufacturing plant in Hagerstown.
The highway’s 12-mile stretch through Maryland is four lanes wide. Delaney says widening the road would create short-term jobs, improve the quality of life and boost the area’s appeal to manufacturers and warehouse operators.
Delaney’s “western Maryland agenda” also includes increased tourism promotion, assistance to farmers and improving rural broadband access.
A Delaney spokesman says the second-term congressman is seriously considering running next year for the U.S. Senate seat to be vacated by the retirement of Democrat Barbara Mikulski.
