Reactions to Gov. Hogan’s announcement that he has cancer

Reactions to Gov. Larry Hogan’s announcement that he has an aggressive cancer of the lymph nodes came swiftly on Monday.

Politicians from both sides of the aisle expressed their support for Hogan and wishes for his well-being. Here is a sampling of their statements:

Republican Governors Association Chairman Bill Haslam: “We’re saddened to hear of Governor Hogan’s cancer diagnosis, but we know he has the tenacity, courage and strength to confront and overcome this new challenge. Our thoughts and prayers are with Governor Hogan and his family.”

U.S. Rep. Andy Harris: “My thoughts are with Governor Hogan and his family. I hope all Marylanders will join me in praying that he has a speedy and complete recovery. We have made dramatic advancements in treatment of this disease and I am sure the Governor will get the best care available.”

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake: “I was saddened to learn of Governor Hogan’s cancer diagnosis this afternoon. This is a moment for all of us to stand together in unity and prayer behind our Governor. I got to work very closely with Governor Hogan during the recent unrest, and we all know that if there is anybody tough enough to beat cancer, it is Governor Hogan. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during this difficult time.”

Former Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, who ran unsuccessfully against Hogan for his office, posted to Twitter to show his support:

Hogan’s predecessor, former Gov. Martin O’Malley, also tweeted:

U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski: “I was stunned and saddened to learn about Governor Hogan’s illness. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his loved ones. I join the people of Maryland in wishing him a complete and speedy recovery. “When Lt. Governor Rutherford called to give me the news, we discussed our shared commitment to our state. On behalf of myself and the delegation, I pledged to work with him and Governor Hogan to maintain the continuity of government and continue working together for the good of all Marylanders.

President of the Maryland Senate Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr.: “Governor Hogan and his family are longtime friends, and I was saddened to hear of his personal news today. As he begins his path to treatment and recovery, I know the thoughts and prayers of myself, the Maryland Senate, and all Marylanders are with him and his family.”

Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates Michael E. Busch: “My thoughts and prayers are with Governor Hogan and his family today as he embarks on this fight against cancer. We are fortunate in Maryland to have access to the finest medical system in the country, so I am confident that Governor Hogan will get the best quality medical treatment possible. I know that he will bring the same tenacity and strength to this new personal challenge as he has to all of his professional accomplishments.”

U.S. Rep. John K. Delaney: “April and I send our prayers to Governor Hogan and his whole family. We pray that he has a speedy and full recovery as he begins treatment. All Marylanders are in his corner.” Anne Arundel County Executive Steve Schuh today released the following statement: “Larry Hogan has always been a fighter. Just as he was successful in his fight to change Maryland, I have faith that he will be victorious in his battle against this terrible disease. His courage and good humor in the face of such challenging news should serve as an inspiration to us all.” “The thoughts and prayers of every citizen of Anne Arundel County go out to the Governor and his family during this difficult time.”

Comptroller Peter Franchot (via Facebook): “Along with every Marylander, I am deeply saddened by today’s news about my dear friend, Governor Hogan, and praying this afternoon for him; his wonderful wife, Yumi; their daughters, Julie, Jaymi and Kim, and his entire family. However, I’m comforted by the knowledge that the Governor is one of the toughest fighters I’ve ever met, as well as a man of deep and abiding faith. With Yumi and his entire family at his side, I know that he will approach this latest challenge with the same sense of determination and resolve that has made him so successful in business, politics and government. In the meantime, I stand ready to assist Governor Hogan and our exceptional Lieutenant Governor, Boyd Rutherford, in any way possible in the days, weeks and months to come.”
