Small businesses in downtown Frederick hope a new mobile loyalty app will increase store traffic by combining traditional store reward programs under a community banner.
The Shop Frederick app is “meant to strengthen loyalty to an area” as opposed to individual businesses, said Jon Anderson, marketing strategist for Loyal Tap, the company that developed the app.
The app currently includes 21 businesses, comprising a mix of restaurants and retailers as well as the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. Anderson said as the app collects users, Loyal Tap will continue speaking with other local businesses to try to add them to the platform.
Each of the 21 businesses offers its own rewards program; by frequenting the stores, customers can gain points either toward business-specific rewards, such as a free meal, or “community stars,” which are a separate, general category of reward.
After earning five community stars, Anderson said, a larger reward such as a $20 gift card redeemable at any of the participating businesses would be available.
The app will launch tomorrow at a community event sponsored by the Downtown Frederick Partnership, where Anderson said Loyal Tap will have a booth set up to help community members download it. It will have both an Android and iOS version.
The app’s developers hope to use its community element to help grow interest in the downtown Frederick area.
“Downtown Frederick has a really cool identity,” Anderson said. “It’s got that mix of historic and kind of hip at the same time. It’s a cozy downtown feel, but it’s got a lot going on, too.”
