The Daily Record has appointed award-winning senior legal reporter Danny Jacobs as its new legal editor.
Jacobs, who joined the newspaper in 2008, has helped expand The Daily Record’s legal coverage in several key areas and been a point person in the development of its digital products.
“It is with great pleasure that I would like to announce the promotion of Danny Jacobs to the role of legal editor for The Daily Record,” said Publisher Suzanne Fischer-Huettner. “Danny has been with us for seven years and has been excellent in every role – Baltimore County reporter, legal reporter, web editor and senior legal reporter. He has a keen understanding of the legal industry and has built strong relationships across the state of Maryland.
“Danny has been the passion behind our Generation JD blog, which in turn has built brand ambassadors to help spread the word about our strong content. His reporting is well-respected and accurate, and he has earned the respect of our team as well as our readers. Danny is the natural candidate to take on this role and take The Daily Record’s legal content to the next level.”
He begins his new job on July 13.
Thomas Baden Jr., the newspaper’s editor, said Jacobs had an innate feel for what goes into a compelling news story and was committed to the highest standards of journalism.
Jacobs has won numerous journalism awards. His examination of lead paint litigation in Baltimore received the 2014 Maryland Delaware D.C. Press Association environmental reporting award. His profile of a Frederick County church founded by freed slaves also was recognized by the organization.
“Danny knows that we have a sophisticated and thoughtful readership that demands accuracy, insight and relevance in our law coverage,” Baden said. “The field of law is constantly evolving. It shapes our society, our democracy and our culture in profound ways. Danny is the ideal person to help our team maintain and improve the quality of our reportage and expand how we share it with readers.”
Jacobs, a native of Baltimore County, is a graduate of the University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism. He previously worked for The Gazette in Montgomery County.
He and his wife, Michelle, are the proud parents of seven-day-old Harper. The family lives in Laurel.
“I’m looking forward to continuing the tradition of excellent legal coverage at The Daily Record,” Jacobs said. “We will continue to provide lawyers in Maryland with their daily, continuing legal education while also trying to broaden our readership.”
Jacobs is an adjunct journalism professor at the Merrill College, an avid runner and a fan of humorist Dave Barry. He enjoys family trips to Ocean City.
He and his father, Howard, also represent the answer to a quiz-show trivia question: Who are a father and son who appeared as contestants on “Jeopardy!”?
One Baltimore attorney familiar with Jacobs’ work said he is among the tops in his field.
“It’s a great choice,” said I. William Chase. “I think he’s a great journalist. He’s a terrific researcher. Danny makes sure everything is a fact before he writes anything. He has a great rapport with everyone he talks to. He know the ups and downs of the legal system.
“He’s a great choice.”
