Dunbar to lay off 100 Md. employees after losing contract

Dunbar Armored Inc. will be laying off 100 employees next month, but the majority of the affected personnel won’t have to go far to find a new job.

The layoffs will come at Dunbar’s White Marsh location at 4983 Mercantile Rd., according to a Work Adjustment and Retraining Notification notice filed Tuesday. The cuts will be effective Aug. 24.

They come as a result of the armored courier company losing a local contract with Bank of America, which is transferring that business to competitor Loomis Armored US. About 60 to 70 of the laid-off Dunbar employees will be placed with the local Loomis operation, said Sean Gibbons, Dunbar’s vice president of marketing and communications.

Those employees won’t have to alter their commute plans: last December, Loomis leased a 50,000-square-foot facility located at 4979 Mercantile Rd. as it moves from the Rosedale area and expands.

Gibbons said that Dunbar is working to help place the remaining 30-40 employees in new jobs as well.

The 100-person loss accounts for about 60 percent of Dunbar’s 165 White Marsh personnel, but it is confined to that location and will not affect the company’s operations elsewhere, Gibbons said.

Dunbar employs 5,200 people nationwide, and 800 in Maryland, Gibbons said.
