Laureate International

Rachael L. Lighty was the lead spokesperson for BGE until April, when she joined Laureate International, the world’s leading higher education provider.

Laureate’s more than 80 universities educate more than 1 million students in 29 countries.

Lighty attributes her success to her passion for making a positive impact on others, quoting Mother Theresa, “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the water to create many ripples.” She says it is this passion that drives her commitment to volunteerism and philanthropy, motivates her in her career and guides her in her relationships with family, friends, colleagues and her community.

At BGE, Lighty says her most significant professional accomplishment was the management of the crisis communications and all media relations for the company, effectively managing risk to BGE’s reputation daily, as well as throughout the restoration efforts during several extreme events, including two hurricanes, a derecho and several winter storms.

Lighty, 32, also is a board member of the United Way of Central Maryland’s Emerging Leaders United and vice president of the Baltimore Public Relations Council. At ELU, Lighty has lead professional development, educational opportunities, volunteerism and networking events, connecting ELU members and other young professionals to United Way and the community.

As a certified cause consultant through the Georgetown University Center for Social Impact, Lighty also provides pro bono strategic communications, media relations, social media and digital engagement consultation for The Literacy Lab in Washington, D.C.
