Suspicious death of inmate at Md. prison probed

CUMBERLAND — Maryland’s prison agency says state police are investigating the death of an inmate at the maximum-security Western Correctional Institution near Cumberland as a possible homicide.

The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services says the 30-year-old inmate was found dead in his cell Wednesday morning. The agency says investigators are questioning his cellmate.

The prison agency hasn’t yet released the deceased inmate’s name. Spokesman Gerard Shields says the inmate was serving nine years on drug charges and had been imprisoned since 2010.

This is the second suspicious death of a state prison inmate in less than two weeks. Fifty-nine-year-old Terrance Cirata was found dead in his cell at the neighboring North Branch Correctional Institution on July 16. His death has been ruled a homicide by asphyxiation.
