Screen_Shot_2015_08_17_at_9.52.32_AMEight startups will pitch to a panel of potential investors next Thursday as part of the inaugural Beta City event, a celebration and showcase of local entrepreneurship.

“This group represents some of the best and brightest companies from the region,” Jennifer Meyer, CEO of Betamore, said in a statement. “Helping companies like these grow is central to making Baltimore a global destination for entrepreneurship.”

Betamore, the Federal Hill-based incubator, co-working space and education center, is co-sponsoring Beta City with Plank Industries.  The event, which will include a pitch session and VIP demo event, will be held at Plank Industries’ new City Garage innovation center at Port Covington.

The eight startups making their pitch are:

  • Alchemy Learning, which produces virtual-reality educational tools.
  • Artichoke, which makes a mobile app to aid client management and billing for small businesses.
  • Citelighter, a platform that helps students develop research and writing skills.
  • Protenus, developers of a system to make electronic medical records more secure.
  • Quantified Care, a mobile health tech company that works to integrate smartphones and medical devices.
  • Sickweather, an app that scans social media to gauge the risk of illness in a given area.
  • Sonavex, which has developed a simplified ultrasound device to detect blood clots.
  • Yet Analytics, which offers data analytics solutions.

The companies will pitch Thursday afternoon to investors from Greenspring Associates, Grotech Ventures, Camden Partners, Plank Industries itself, New Enterprise Associates, the Maryland Technology Development Corporation and the Baltimore Angels.

Fifteen additional companies will also participate in the demo event that evening: Bowerbags, EduPal, HEX Performance, Hungry Harvest, Immuta, LarkSpear, Milestone Sports, NewsUp, OpiaTalk, Oros, Parking Panda, ShapeU, StraighterLine, VoltRide, and Zest Tea, according to Betamore.
