Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures
In 1990, Dr. Marsha E. Butler conceptualized, designed and implemented a comprehensive oral health education program called Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures.
This initiative is directed towards high risk youth populations and utilizes public-private partnerships, community-based outreach and parent-involvement to improve oral health of low-income inner city children in the U.S.
Under Butler’s leadership, Bright Smiles, Bright Futures has been implemented in 80 countries around the world, reaching 650 million children.
Since April, Baltimore has been home to a dedicated mobile dental van.
The van is a mobile home turned into a mobile dental office to serve youth 12 years old and under at community and school events. It includes two examination chairs, a lounge area and more.
The mobile van is accompanied by a dental health curriculum intended to teach children and their parents about proper dental care.
This year, the van in Baltimore is expected to reach more than 10,000 children.
