National Weather Service gets advanced data system

The , headquartered in Silver Spring, has upgraded its weather data system.

Waltham, Mass-based Raytheon announced Thursday that it had finished rolling out the system, which may help the weather service make even more precise and timely weather predictions. The company’s Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System II  is up and running at all weather services offices across the U.S. and its territories, providing advanced data analysis and visualization capabilities.

“The modernized AWIPS II processes significantly more data from even more sources than the previous system, enabling better, more accurate forecasts,” said Dave Wajsgras, president of Raytheon Intelligence, Information and Services .

The company installed AWIPS II at more than 140 weather service offices. The new system can also be accessed on laptops.
