Giant cutting 89 jobs at Baltimore distribution center

Giant is permanently eliminating 89 jobs at its pharmacy distribution center in Baltimore starting Jan. 30, according to the  Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

The job cuts will take place through mid-February, which is when the grocer’s sole pharmacy distribution center will close, said Giant spokesman Jamie Miller.

The grocery chain is moving toward a 100 percent direct store delivery system with its supplier, McKesson Corporation, a San Francisco-based pharmaceutical distributor for retail stores. McKesson supplies pharmaceuticals for all Giant stores.

“We’re really expanding on that relationship with McKesson,” said Miller.

The warehouse, located at 7110 Ambassador Road in Milford Mill, has 89 workers including 61 part-time associates. Miller said the future of those workers at Giant will be determined in the coming weeks.

“We expect that most if not all the associates will have the opportunities to transition to other positions and locations within Giant,” said Miller.

Giant will work with unions Local 27 and 355 to determine workers’ options, said Miller.

“We’re committed to treating all the associates affected by this change in a fair and respectful way.”
